Capitalism defined by KiN Camell

In theory capitalism is supposedly “free trade" or a diplomatic economy as opposed to dictatorship (communism). However in practice Capitalism is maximizing monetary profits through exploiting the labor or resources of underprivileged people . Capitalism is often unempathetic to labor laws which is why outsourcing and offshoring was such a heavy topic a few years ago. Capitalism is excessive i.e. Walmart, Costco, Amazon . Capitalism is a pyramid scheme having no cap/limit for the few who are on top.

Fear = No Joke

  1. What are some key differences between systemic racism and structural racism? Please explain and give examples. (Ch. 2, Race and Racism)

    4. In Zinn Ch.2 "Drawing the Color Line,"  what evidence does the author present of resistance/uprisings against slavery? (Zinn, pp. 23-38)

  1. Think of an issue related to racial inequality and use one of the frameworks discussed in this chapter to explain it. Justify your selection of this framework over others. (Ch. 2, Race and Racism)
Institutional racism also known as systematic racism is evident throughout the criminal justice system i.e. 37% of the people convicted for drug offenses in the U.S were Black despite making up only 13% of the total U.S. population (Rights Watch 2008) . Structural racism is cultural and based on public policy as opposed to law (systematic racism). White privilege gives non Melanted people access to benefits that are excluded to Melanated people i.e. when I go on roadtrips with my Godbrother (Jewish non Melanted) he is aware that we are less likely to get pulled over if he drives.
Howard Zinn concisely linked the major factors that established slavery in the U.S and the fuel which kept it kinetic for nearly 3 Centuries. In 1609 AD The “New English” colonists (illegal immigrants) who settled in Virginia/ Jamestown had been afflicted with the fear of having to resort to cannibalism or starving to death. That fear propelled the colonists to contact the English government with the sole purpose of requesting planting supplies for agricultural endeavors and a  “free labor force” aka slaves. Since the Muslim Arabs ,Portuguese and Spanish had demonstrated how lucrative the trading of African Slaves can be the English followed suit. The power of violence was also a major factor in facilitating the longevity of U.S chattel slavery so ruthless millitias who carried out mass hangings were an effective tool in keep slavery alive and well. Finally the last factor Zinn mentioned was legal and social punishment that came with Black and White conspiring to rebel against colony ( Bacon's Rebellion).
Tanya Maria Golash Boza mentions that Assimilation focuses on group factors such as; being the only melanted person in a job setting or adjusting to a private school with a Melanin deprived student  body and staff. I have had to navigate through vast amounts of environments which lack cultural diversity. In order to reduce racial tension or the ignorance and fear that racism breeds I admit to treading on the line of being the racquet ball club side of myself and an Oakland version of Bryant Gumble. Now is that a bad thing ? The writer's from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air might lean toward the latter.
Tanya Maria Golash Boza begins chapter 2 of Racisms Racial Ideologies by providing a few examples of racial inequality such as; qualified Black applicants who do not receive a job interview upon applying or the lack of job offers extended to Black potential employees upon job interviews. Boza aldo shares the magnitude of how the media (TV, Internet, Movies, Music etc) shapes racial prejudices which permeates the unconscious and sub consciousness of the general public. This is crucial since the U.S is still a very segregated country and unfortunately many White (Non Melanated) have limited if any interactions with Black (Melanated) people therefore the media presents them with swayed and often bias images of Black people. I used this framework to revisit how I'm constantly reminded that I'm not really Black/Melanated because I dont fit into a mold produced by viacom or clear channel/i heart radio.

Double Consciousness = No Joke

Greetings,

The double consciousness W.E.B Dubois referred to is still very much prevalent in the 21st century despite some media outlets claiming the U.S is in a post racial era. I've had Melanated and non Melanated(White) people tell me I'm really not Black /Melanated because I do not fit into the "stereotypical Black guy "protocol so, I guess I'm not urban or gangster enough.  2 years ago while I was waiting for the bus in Oakland Ca (52nd and MLK) when a police officer got out of the cop car and asked the Caucasion lady standing next to me if she was ok, as if I was posing a threat so I guess I was being too Black that day.  I've experienced so many incidents where my melanin scares people that I often have to cross the street to prevent anyone from feeling uncomfortable  . My double consciousness sense is pretty sharp since I  grew up in Marin County. I said all that to say I understand the sentiments W E B Dubois shared when he stated “living as an American yet treated as an outsider”. Dubois concluded “ it forces someone to regularly view herself or himself  from a marginalized position”.

Peace to W E B Dubois + Ibram X Kendi

  1. Why is it important to clarify that the idea of race is a modern invention? (Chapter 1, Race and Racism)
  2. How does the existence of "double consciousness" and "the veil" affect W.E.B. Du Bois' own experience as an African-American?
  3. How can The Souls of Black Folk be used to examine race relations in the 21st Century?
Ibram X Kendi’s book “Stamped From the Beginning” addresses the origins of racist ideas ,theories and practices. The title of Kendi’s book is inspired by a quote from former Mississippi Senator (Jefferson Davis) who stated “ Black people being inferior (to White people) was stamped from the beginning”. Kendi conveys a racist concept is any idea of one race being superior or inferior to another.  Throughout the first 2 chapters of Stamped From the Beginning Kendi analyzes the history of racsim and slavery plus its influences such as ; Aristotle’s “Climate Theory" and Prince Harry of Portugal industrialized African slave trading practices. Kendi provides a timeline to clearly demonstrate racism is relatively modern dating back to the 15th century.  According to the documentary Race : Power of Illusion race is based on an external observation and ultimately a social construct lacking genetic basis. The narrator mentioned there are no genetic markers to determine or define race.
In the book “The Souls of Black Folks” W.E.B Dubois acknowledges “the despair and self doubt of African American struggling to be treated with dignity and respect “(Souls of Black Folks pg 37). Dubois succinctly summerized the U.S transition fron chattel slavery to amancipation as “ the bewildeted serf gives way to youth with dawning self consciousness,  self realization and self respect” (Souls of Black Folks pg 195). Despite Dubois academic achievements (author, sociologist, professor, civil rights activist etc) he was still affected by “The Veil" which is symbolic to the U.S racial color line restricting the upward mobility of Black(Melanated) Americans. The veil can also be interpreted as a shade which prevents White Americans from seeing Black people as humans let alone as American citizens (The 3/5 compromise) . One example inhumanity of the veil occurred in 1899 when W.E B Dubois infant son Burgherdt died because no White doctor would assist him with his illness (Diplitheria). W E B Dubois mentioned a twoness (double consciousness) meaning two souls conflicted within one dark body as opposed to the oneness which White Americans enjoy including the perks of civil rights, life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This sense of a double consciousness forces Black Americans to see themselves in the lense of White America (white supremacy) and is still prevalent in the 21st century i.e Mike Vik (Black/Melanated man) serves 21 months in prison for killing a dog and Johannes Mehserle (non Melanated man) serves 11 months in jail for killing a Melanated man.

Peace to The Bronx NY

Cheebah Cheebah y'all
I need Sativas y’all

In the 1970s
NYC wasn't heavenly
The school system for the public
Was rubbish
Plus its published
So you can read thee
How and why
(Huh) its outside
The school and church
The youth search
For truth and worth
And DJ Kool Herc
Was the new birth
Since politicians were cruel jerks
The Big Apple has worms and snakes
They come in many forms and shapes
The serpent's tool
Was urban renewal
An astounding process
That moved Black and Brown
To housing projects
While vile
Land lords
Made the Bronx
Resemble Vietnam War
Can you believe these mad men ?
Even Reggie Jackson
Was treated stanky
And he's the best player on the Yankees
Baseball Team
Race of all things,
Is used for separation
And since welfare is not reparations
City streets are filled with desperation
This is the bridge
Which gives kids
A lift and that's big

In the heart if the Bronx
A new art form was launched
To abstain from gangs and other thangs
Teens need an outlet
Rappers Delight was out yet
